How much do your training programs cost?

Every dog is different, which is why our training programs are tailored to each dog’s individual needs, temperament, and training goals. Final pricing is determined following an initial consultation, where we can evaluate your dog and recommend the most appropriate training program.

Puppy training programs typically start around $800, while adult basic obedience programs start around $1,200. Specialized programs, including aggression rehabilitation, bite work, and service dog training, vary in price depending on the complexity of training required.

A consultation and behavioral assessment are required for all dogs enrolling in reactivity or aggression training programs.

How long does a typical training program last, and how often are sessions?

Most of our training programs last approximately six weeks, with sessions held once a week for about one hour. However, every dog learns at their own pace, and training timelines may vary depending on the dog’s individual needs, behavioral challenges, and training goals.

More specialized programs, particularly those involving aggression, reactivity, or service dog training, may require additional time.

What age can puppies start training, and what vaccinations are required?

Puppies can begin our training programs as early as 16 weeks old. To ensure the health and safety of all dogs participating, puppies must be fully vaccinated before attending classes, including DHPP, Bordetella, and rabies.

We encourage owners to begin building good habits at home before formal training begins!

Do you train all breeds and sizes, including bully breeds?

Absolutely! At Ruff Start Training Co., we proudly welcome dogs of all ages, breeds, and sizes. In fact, our brand was built on bully breeds!

We strongly believe that every dog deserves a fair opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed, regardless of their breed or background. We don’t believe in breed discrimination, and our training approach focuses on each dog’s individual temperament, personality, and needs.

Do owners participate in training sessions, or do you offer board and train programs?

We love having our pawrents actively involved in the training process! Building a strong relationship between you and your dog is one of the most important parts of successful training.

Our programs focus on teaching both dogs and their owners the skills needed for long term success. However, we also offer board and train options for those seeking a more immersive training experience. These programs can be discussed during your consultation to determine the best fit for you and your dog.

What training methods do you use? Do you use e-collars, prong collars, or treats?

At Ruff Start Training Co., we follow a balanced training philosophy while prioritizing the principles of LIMA, which stands for Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive. We believe training should be individualized, fair, and focused on the physical and emotional well-being of each dog.

We emphasize positive reinforcement through treats, praise, play, and rewards to teach and encourage desired behaviors. When appropriate, we may also incorporate training tools such as prong collars and e-collars, depending on the individual dog’s needs, temperament, and training goals.

We recognize that not every dog responds well to corrections, and improper use of training tools can worsen behavioral challenges. Our approach prioritizes the least intrusive and minimally aversive effective methods, with more intrusive techniques considered only when appropriate.

Our goal is to build confidence, clear communication, and a trusting relationship between dogs and their owners.

Can you help with aggression or reactivity toward dogs or people?

Absolutely! Behavioral modification is one of our specialties at Ruff Start Training Co. We work with dogs experiencing leash reactivity, fear based aggression, resource guarding, dog directed or human directed aggression, and other complex behavioral challenges. We also have experience working with severe behavioral cases, including dogs with documented bite histories.

Our founder holds the Certified Behavior Consultant Canine Knowledge Assessed (CBCC-KA) credential, reflecting specialized knowledge in canine behavior and behavior modification.

Because every dog and behavioral concern is unique, an initial consultation and comprehensive behavioral assessment are required for all reactivity and aggression cases. This allows us to evaluate the dog’s behavioral history, identify potential triggers, assess safety concerns, and determine whether our programs are an appropriate fit.

Our goal is to improve safety, build confidence, address underlying behavioral concerns, and help dogs and their owners develop a better understanding of one another.

What happens during the first consultation, and is there a fee?

Our initial consultation is an opportunity for us to get to know you and your dog! During this appointment, we discuss your dog’s behavioral history, temperament, daily routine, and training goals. We also conduct a behavioral assessment when appropriate to better understand any challenges and determine the most suitable training approach.

Consultations typically last 30 to 45 minutes, with fees ranging from $150 to $250 depending on the severity and complexity of your dog’s behavioral concerns.

Following the consultation, we’ll discuss our recommendations, available training programs, and individualized pricing.

Consultations and behavioral assessments are required for all dogs enrolling in reactivity or aggression training programs.

Where do training sessions take place, and do you charge for travel?

Ruff Start Training Co. operates out of two locations in Port Hueneme and Ventura, proudly serving the entire Ventura County community!

Our training sessions are typically held in public locations, allowing us to work with dogs in real world environments and practice skills around everyday distractions.

We also offer travel accommodations on a case by case basis, depending on your dog’s behavioral needs and individual circumstances. Any additional travel arrangements or applicable fees can be discussed during your consultation.

How long does service dog training take, and do you help owners train their own dogs?

Service dog training is a lengthy and highly individualized journey. While every dog progresses at their own pace, owners should generally expect the training process to take anywhere from six months to two years, depending on the dog’s age, temperament, previous training experience, and the specific disability related tasks they need to learn.

At Ruff Start Training Co., we offer comprehensive service dog training, including foundational obedience, public access skills, task training, and handler education. We encourage owners to remain actively involved throughout the training process to build a strong, reliable working relationship with their dogs.

Not every dog is suited for service work, which is why we evaluate each dog’s temperament, behavior, and suitability throughout the process.

Our goal is to develop confident, reliable service dog teams while prioritizing the welfare of both the dog and handler.

Do you guarantee training results?

While we are committed to providing professional guidance, effective training methods, and individualized programs, we cannot guarantee specific results. Every dog is different, and progress depends on factors such as temperament, behavioral history, consistency, and owner participation.

We believe training is a lifelong commitment, not a one time fix. Long term success requires owners to consistently practice and reinforce the skills their dogs learn, even after completing a program.

Our goal is to equip both dogs and their owners with the knowledge, tools, and confidence needed for continued success.

What is your cancellation or rescheduling policy?

We understand that life happens, and we always do our best to be flexible and accommodate our clients! However, we kindly ask for at least 24 hours’ notice when canceling or rescheduling an appointment.

Cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice will incur a $50 late cancellation fee. Missed appointments without prior notice will be charged the full session amount, and the session will be forfeited.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in helping us maintain availability for all our clients!

What should I bring to my first training session?

For your first training session, please bring your dog on a secure leash with a properly fitted collar or harness, along with high value treats or rewards your dog enjoys. We also recommend bringing any training equipment you currently use so we can evaluate what works best for you and your dog.

Please have your dog’s current vaccination records available and be prepared to discuss their behavioral history, daily routine, and training goals.

If your dog has a history of aggression, biting, or other significant behavioral concerns, we ask that you disclose this information before your appointment so we can make appropriate safety arrangements.

Most importantly, come ready to learn, ask questions, and have fun with your dog!
